What's the best way to take infrared pictures?

I want to take pictures in infrared. What are my options? I'd prefer a point and shoot digital camera, but I think I'm out of luck. I'd really like a camera that records a couple different wavelenghs of infrared light as separate primary colors. Is there such a thing?

There is a way to test to see if your camera can shoot infrared. Find a TV remote, point it at your camera with a button pressed on the remote, and take a picture. If the light shows up, you can do it. But to get the effect, you will need an infrared filter. They are very dark red, and somewhat expensive, but you get some cool results. When you get your results, the pictures will look red. All you need to do is remove the color for a black and white infrared picture, or adjust the colors for different wild effects in infrared color.

The only other way is to get a film camera (preferably the older type that doesn't read your film's ISO when it loads-they use an infrared scan to read it), and buy a roll of infrared film. It's expensive, and requires special handling, but the results are awesome!
